American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Training

When:

Saturday, March 1, 2008, 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., St. Stephen's

Who: Philmont Leaders and Scouts-Others if space is available. Maximum class size is ten people.
What: American Red Cross First Aid, CPR , and AED certification course.
Bring: Sack Lunch, or $5.00 and we’ll order Pizza and Soda.
Cost: $30.00 Depending on the Cost of Materials from the ARC.

Caving Trip

When: Leave Saturday, March 8, 2008, 7:00 a.m. from St. Stephen’s
Return Sunday, March 9, 2008, 4:30 p.m., to St. Stephen’s
Who: All Scouts and Leaders
What: We will camp in the West Virginia Cave Country Campground, 304 358 7553. Scouts who need to complete First Class Cooking requirements can do so on this trip. David Swope, the owner of Creep & Crawl LLC-Trailside Outfitters, Brunswick, MD, 301 834 8071, will guide us through caves in the area. His company will also provide us with helmets and lamps, but scouts everyone should have a back-up flashlight with them. Caving requires a lot of crawling and climbing (not technical), and everyone will get very dirty and wet. So wear old clothes, and boots. This trip will be a lot of fun and an unusual experience for those who have never been caving.

In addition to the normal camping gear, wear sturdy boots, bring old clothes for the cave. snacks for the drive (3 hours), water bottle.
Cost:

$70.00 per person due Wednesday, February 20, 2008, and bring money for McDonald’s on the way home.

Coral Reef Sailing – Florida Sea Base

When: Leave Friday, March 14, 2008
Return Sunday, March 23, 2007
Who: Scouts 13 years old by 9/1/07, Good Swimmer, Limited to six (6) scouts
Adults 18 years old by 9/1/07, Good Swimmer, Limited to two (2) adults
What: This is a terrific trip to the Florida Keys. We’ll live on a 42 foot Morgan sail boat, swim, snorkel and fish. We will be the crew, but Sea Base provides the captain.  Visit beautiful coral reefs, dock at marinas, anchor overnight at secluded locations, and visit Key West for a fun day trip.  The plan is to drive to the Sea Base stopping overnight and visiting the US Air Force Space Center as well as other sights.

New Scout Hike Maryland Heights

When: Leave Saturday, March 22, 2008, 7:00 a.m., from St. Stephen's
Return Saturday, March 22, 2008, 4:30 p.m., to St. Stephen's
Who: New Scouts and their parents and Troop Guides
What: Hike up the mountain overlooking the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers.  Visit historic Harpers Ferry where John Brown captured the Federal Armory before the Civil War.
Where: Maryland Heights Trail near Harpers Ferry, WV
Bring: Day pack (book pack), lunch, water bottle, layer clothing, extra socks, hiking boots, moleskin, and a poncho.
Cost:

None, but bring money for a stop at McD's and snacks in Harpers Ferry.

Bike the Mount Vernon Trail

When: Leave from St. Stephen's, Sunday, March 22, 2007, 9:00 a.m.
Return to St. Stephen's, Saturday, March 22, 2007 3:30 p.m.
Who: All Scouts and Leaders
What: Work on the Cycling Merit Badge or continue working on it. Cycle 17 miles from Geroge Washington’s home, Mount Vernon along the Potomac River to Arlington, VA. Drivers needed to bring us to the start of the trail, and to bring scouts back from the trail’s end. We also need a driver as a chase car.
Where: Mount Vernon Trail – Alexandria to Arlington
Bring: Lunch, water bottle, and biking supplies like gloves, helmet, bike repair tools and tires.
Cost: None, but bring money for snacks along the way.

Parents’ Meeting

When: Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 7:45 p.m., St. Stephen's
Who: All Parents; New Parents in particular
What: Learn about how our troop operates. Come meet our troop adult leaders and fellow parents. We have some new adult leaders, and some who have been working with the troop for many years. Our leaders will talk about the troop’s advancement program, and merit badges, troop finances, troop records, boy leaders, patrols, the new scout program, and what parents do. Past parents’ meetings have been very well received and very informative. Our goal is for parents to know who to go in order to have their questions answered. We’ll have refreshments.
