Scouting for Food

When:

Saturday, Nov 8, 2008, 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., St. Stephen's

Who: All Scouts not attending the Hike-o-ree, Adult Leaders and Parents.
Where: Scouts and parents will go through the neighborhoods that have been assigned to our troop to pick up food donations and return to the Food Pantry at St. Stephen’s.
What: Scout Units all over Virginia, Maryland and the District will be collecting food to donate to Food Pantries on this once-a-year massive Good Turn. Our troop will distribute SFF bags the prior Wednesday. Parents are needed to drive and monitor scouts as they go door-to-door.
Bring: Wear Class “A” uniform.
Cost: None

Hike-o-ree

When: Leave Saturday, Nov 8, 2008, 7:00 a.m., from St. Stephen's, Return Sunday, Nov 9, 2008, 12:30 p.m., to St. Stephen's
Who: Two Crews: Older Scouts (14+ and 12-14 years old) , and Adult Leaders
Where: 4‑H Camp, Markham, VA, and Hiking in the Shenandoah National Park –Old Rag Mountain
What: Hike-o-ree’s are great!  It’s a ten-mile day hike in the glorious Virginia mountains. We camp at the 4‑H Center using backpacking equipment. After the hike we'll stop for a pizza dinner in Front Royal, VA, and before leaving for home, we have breakfast at McDonalds.
Bring: Lightweight back packing equipment, rain suit or poncho, cup, bowl, spoon, extra socks, insect repellant, sun screen.
Cost:

$40 per person for registration, food, and T‑shirt due Wed, Oct 29, 2008.


Animal Science Merit Badge

When: Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008, 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., to/from St. Stephen’s
Who: All Scouts and Leaders
Where: Frying Pan Park, Herndon, VA
What: Here's a chance to earn the Animal Science Merit Badge at a working farm. Scouts will have a chance to milk cows or goats. Here are the merit badge requirements:

1) Livestock breeds,

2) Principal diseases,

3)Digestive systems,

4)Livestock care and feeding,

6D) Dairying options: a) dairy cow physiology, b) ingredients of cow's milk, c) pasteurization, d) dairy processing equipment and sanitation, e) observe/participate MILKING a cow or goat

Bring: Warm clothes that can get dirty, sturdy shoes or boots, snacks, water bottle, paper and pencil, merit badge pamphlet.
Cost:

$10.00 per person, and money for McDonald’s on the way home.

Pre-Thanksgiving Camping Trip

When: Leave 7:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2008, from St. Stephen’s

Return 12:30 p.m., Sunday, November 23, 2008, to St. Stephen’s

Who:

Scouts and Leaders, Parents, Siblings, Friends, and Relatives welcome for dinner

Where: Camp Highroads, Middleburg, VA
What: This is one of our troop’s really great trips. We’ll build an outdoor oven to roast turkeys for a great Thanksgiving dinner. Patrols will fix the trimmings. While the birds are roasting, scouts will either go Mountain Boarding or do the zip wire and confidence course. Patrol camping, work on outdoor advancement requirements, Scouts can bicycle home on Sunday to continue working on the Cycling Merit Badge. Guests should plan to arrive for dinner at 5:30 p.m. We’ll have a roaring campfire after dinner. Sign up sheet at meeting: Please chose Mountain Boarding, or Zip Wire, and Bike Hike if desired. Indicate names of guests.
Bring: Cool Weather Clothes ‑ Hat, Gloves, Sweater, Rain Gear, boots, thermal underwear, personal mess kit (cup, bowl, plate, spoon, fork and knife).
Cost:

$45.00 per person due Wed, Nov 12, 2008. Guests $15.00 for dinner.
